This was the ¿rst indication I had that the Rav was not happy with the work being done. The ¿rst name of the Rav’s mother was spelled out with a ‘vav,’ unlike the way it was supposed to be written. How could it be? Just yesterday, the text that the contrac- tor returned had under- gone scrutiny and was checked not to contain that extra ‘vav.’ With no way of ¿xing that which was already engraved in stone, I angrily asked the contractor, “Now what do we do?” He stood there, also surprised. “How is it possible?” he asked. “Yesterday, we studied the text together, and the extra ‘vav’ didn’t appear. You even gave me your consent.” He then went into his of- ¿ce to search for the rough draught of the text which carried my signa- ture.
