263 Seven years earlier, the ‘Babi Sali’ success- fully thwarted the Satan’s attempts to bring destruction down upon the Jewish nation. His passing was the atone- ment that the Jewish people needed to rescind the Divine decree. As our sages have taught, the death of the righteous atones for the sins of the generation. A few weeks before his passing, another great Kabbalist passed away – Harav Mordechai Shaarabi zt”l, head of the Nahar Shalom Yeshiva in Jerusa- lem. Again, a tzaddik’s death atones. G-d sends His protective shield to ward off destruction and loss o f life. Empty buildings are destroyed in the Gulf War, devoid of inhabitants, who miraculously were not present when the missiles fell. In this war, G-d ‘programmed’ their trajectory, sending them to these buildings and protecting His children from the shadow of harm which loomed over them, in the merit of these great tzaddikim. “The tzaddik was lost and no one notices, men of kindness have passed away without realizing why, for the tzaddik was gathered in, to precede the outbreak of evil.” The death of tzaddikim atone Several months after the Rav passed away, in the hot summer months of 2006, again the skies became darkened with the threat of war. Again the sounds of frightening sirens shattered the peaceful silence. Residents of the north, from Dan to Haifa, receive a battering of rockets from the Hizbullah. Some 4,000 rockets of all different sizes land in Israel, some threa- tening to destroy major production plants in Haifa. It is afternoon, and a siren sounds, a warning of an impending rocket from some hidden base in Lebanon. Everyone runs to their bomb shelter and await developments. Nervous minutes pass, no one knowing where it will fall. Reserved and with- drawn, people inwardly pray to G-d that it will
