261 The sons broke each one, effortlessly. Whereupon Yaakov said, “If you will be united as one bundle, no one will be able to defeat you. If, however, you do not have unity, anyone will be able to break you.” A house which has dis- cord, or a city which has quarrels, will be broken apart in the end. This is what Yaakov taught us. We need simply to be united, and that unity is our strength. This is what happened when the missiles Àew over our heads, falling within our tiny land. Minutes passed and no one knew where the missile fell. We were united as one nation, each one in his home praying for the welfare of all fellow Jews. Israel is happy with their Maker Picture the scene. It is late at night. Suddenly, the siren sounds, shattering the silence. A terrible bomb is on its way, ready to maim, wound and kill eve- rything which stands in its path. These missiles are the size of a ten story buil- ding, with dozens of tons of explosive material and a large radius of destruc- tive power. Everyone is running to their sealed rooms, as if the nylon sheeting and adhesive tape can actually prevent the missiles from blowing up. All sit within the con¿nes of their shelters, remembering the lesson that the Patriarch Yaakov taught us. We feel the unity, all raising their eyes heavenwards and uttering a prayer to our Father in Heaven for salvation. One woman, who does not know Hebrew, says a prayer in her mother tongue. An architect and an engineer sit and say Psalms from the depths of their hearts, their faces covered by gas masks. Each one prayed in their mother tongue
