Having respect for young and old alike 70 orderly handwriting, as well as the reason for their coming to him, their request, and his response. He would then use these note- books to inquire after their welfare and look forward to hearing good tidings. After a pe- riod of time, the Rav would inquire after each supplicant to ¿nd out how they were doing. When people came to tell him good news, he would smile broadly and give a little chuckle, downgrading his involvement or inÀuence in the outcome. He would ask himself, do I have so many merits to ¿nd favor in Heavens eyes that they should hear my prayers? Do my amulets really succeed in affecting and bringing delive- rance upon the people of Israel? Feeling the pain of others 2ne ¿ne spring day, a woman came to the house of the Rav requesting a blessing for her sick son, who lay in bed unable to stand on his feet. The Rav asked the woman where she lived. Thinking that the Rav probably wanted to send some amulet to their house, she happily gave her address. The next day, a light knock was heard on her door, and she came to answer. She couldn’t believe her eyes, as the Rav stood there, coming to bless her child. This typi- ¿ed the Rav’s behavior, as he would feel the pain and suffering of the afÀicted as well as their families, and did not refrain from personally visiting them, despite his advanced age.
